Murano is an island off Venice, Italy, which is world-renowned for its glass art and the craftsmanship behind it. In 1291, the Italian government decided, due to the risk of fire, that the glassblowers could only work on the island of Murano. In the past 700 years, everything from the glass bottle to the mirror was invented by Murano glassblowers.
However, Murano is much more than just a beautiful island. Being a Murano glassblower is a special certification and a stamp of quality in itself. It typically takes 7-10 years to become a Murano glassblower and is thus reserved for the very best.

How are the Murano lamps produced?
Our Murano table lamps, ceiling lamps and wall lamps are inspired by old tradition from or around the Murano area. Maestros are called glassblowers and their craft has been passed down through many generations. There are many glass techniques, but the Italian glassblowers from Murano keep their glass technique and craftsmanship close to the body, but as with other glass, it is first heated, then shaped.
How does Murano glass get its color?
In the working process of shaping a glass lamp, minerals are added. They are what give the glass its beautiful colour. In between, both gold and silver are used to form patterns in the different layers of glass on both lamps, bonbonniere and other glass objects.

What is a Murano mushroom lamp?
If you don't already know about the iconic mushroom lamp, you have something very special waiting for you. In the 1960s/70s, the mushroom-shaped lamp was born and in recent years it has really become sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts. The design was developed by Murano glassblowers and the lamp was blown out of one piece of glass - most recognizable is the model from the brand Murano Vetri with a swirl pattern.

What is swirl?
It is perhaps the most iconic thing about the Murano lamps that Murano Vintage curates.Swirl is a mouth blown pattern that winds through the glass and is a difficult technique for glassblowers to master. The technique was primarily used on Murano in the 1960s/70s and is today a rare craft only a few of the glassblowers possess. You can often feel the structure of the lamp's swirl if you let your hands slide over the glass and it has a vivid expression in daylight.

What is a ceiling?
Are you looking for a ceiling lamp which sits close to the ceiling and does not require too much space or ceiling height, but still brings something extra your decor, a Murano ceiling lamp is an obvious choice. A ceiling lamp is flat on the back and can therefore be mounted directly on the ceiling or wall. It is especially popular for the entrance hall, bathroom or bedroom. At Murano Vintage we love ceiling lamps and always have a large selection in different designs, shades and sizes. As you may have already discovered, we also have many different Murano table lamps in stock.
