The glass is mouth-blown in a small family-owned workshop by the Italian maestros on the glass-blowing island, Murano, in the Venice lagoon. They are often characterized by the found shades such as pink, yellow, green and purple and have a unique swirl pattern. Because the glass is mouth-blown, all glass has its own unique expression and you will therefore never see two lamps that are completely identical. The technique was developed on the island many years ago and today it is only mastered by a very few glassblowers and it requires incredible precision to create the pattern. White Murano glass lamps with swirl
The most classic version of a Murano glass lamp is the white one in opal glass. It was the one you were most exposed to in the 1970s and the one you'll most often see today. This applies both to Murano lamps and to Louis Poulsen lamps. This is because many of the glassblowers always have a heated oven with opal glass and thus do not require special production. Having said that, the Italian Murano lamps are still rarer than other white glass lamps because very few Murano glassblowers, also called maestros, master the complicated technique behind the swirl pattern. Many of the small family-owned glassblowers on the island of Murano in the Venice lagoon went bankrupt in the 1980s due to the economic crisis. You can read more about the history behind Murano here.
When that part is said, mouth-blown white glass lamps are incredibly beautiful to decorate with. With their light but still unique shape, they are easy to place and provide an incredibly pleasant light. For white glass lamps, we always recommend 2700 kelvin, also known as warm white, to achieve a pleasant and functional light.
Whether it is your first Murano lamp or you have been collecting for many years, a white glass lamp is always a safe choice. You can have it all your life and it can easily be used in the living room, bedroom, in an entrance hall or in an office. What is Murano glass?
Murano is an island off Venice, Italy, which is world-renowned for its glass art and the craftsmanship behind it. In 1291, the Italian government decided, due to the risk of fire, that the glassblowers could only work on the island of Murano. In the past 700 years, everything from the glass bottle to the mirror was invented by Murano glassblowers.
However, Murano is far more than just a beautiful island. Being a Murano glassblower is a special certification and a stamp of quality in itself. It typically takes 7-10 years to become a Murano glassblower and is thus reserved for the very best.
